Getaways

Getaways: Door County, Wisconsin

Door County also has a wealth of other things to do outside, making it COVID safe. With 53 public swimming beaches, you could spend weeks just exploring beaches! Check out the 11 historic lighthouses along the peninsula shore or visit one of the 5 state parks or 19 county parks. There are more than 23,000 acres of public and preserved land just waiting for you to explore any season!

Want to visit in the winter? There may not be a lot of people there, but there are plenty of snowshoe and cross country ski paths you can check out. Like wine? There are 8 wineries and you could drive along the  Door County Wine Trail, where there are over 50 types of grapes planted for wine harvest. Like golfing? There are 11 golf courses, enabling you to tee off at 180 different holes.  All of the small towns have fantastic little downtowns filled with cute tourist and other shops, or take a leisurely drive in the country and stop at all of the antique and pottery shops and take the time to get to know the local artisans!

If you seriously want to plan a visit, make sure you pick a central location to stay. If you love being on Big Water as much as me, stay on Lake Michigan and listen to the waves crashing against the rock all night long. Find a great place on AirBnB or VRBO on water or acres of land and try hiking, kayaking and swimming in your own back yard. Check out The Clearing, the Jens Jensen designed Folklore school and the natural beauty surrounding it, acres of land designed by one of the early Danish leaders of landscape architecture, Jens Jensen
