Things We Love: Mata Traders

I started buying Mata Traders clothing a decade ago. I lived in Madison, Wisconsin for almost two decades. State Street is the main pedestrian and bus street that connects the Wisconsin Capitol to the University of Wisconsin. I walked up and down State Street all through college and law school. I could not help but buy many cool imported items over the years.

At the top of State Street there is a store called Serrv. Serrv sells accessories and other items made with fair trade practices. While I don’t live in Madison anymore, I still visit frequently and am a frequent customer of Servv. Servv has an incredible selection. One of my favorite lines that they carry is Mata Traders. Three best friends started Mata Traders after a global adventure. They spent four months in India where they feel in love with the culture and markets. The friends loved the textiles, art, and culture, and decided to start a company selling these gorgeous items.

According to their website, Mata Traders is a “design driven, fair trade fashion brand helping to end global poverty and inspire consumers to change the fashion industry.” The products are handmade by artisans in India and Nepal. The artisans support their families, many of whom are economically disadvantaged, through this amazing company and work.

The combination of cool designs, the quality of the fabric and the actual fabric itself. Their summer dresses are fabulous. I could live in their dresses all summer long. The tunics are also fantastic, and look great over a pair of leggings or jeans. Do not forget the cool earrings and headbands as well. Looking for an economical and ethical place to shop? Look no further than Mata Traders.
